UPDATE:
I had some misgivings about the title of this post, but apparently I was dead on.

For thousands of years certain sections of all societies have practiced magick. Invariably
it was a pursuit which conferred power on the individual who practiced it.
Magick has always been a study of the mind and how to make use of it s latent powers.
Some of these powers are still considered by most people to be supernormal. It also
sought to use powers which the people saw in nature and many of these techniques we
now believe to be absurd. Until the middle of the nineteenth century magick remained
obscure and rather haphazard in its approach. Then two things happened which changed
the situation. With the relaxation of legal restrictions brought about by a new tolerance, a
different class of person, the educated class, allowed itself to become involved and to
publish its ideas and its findings. Secondly, a new field of research was being opened -
psychology.
Of course psychology and magick go hand in hand, each complementing the other, but
there are differences. The most important difference is that psychology is the study of
normal mind functions and application in psychiatry is to correct a dysfunction, bringing
the individual back to the state that is considered normal. Magick is the study of para- or
super - normal functions and its application is to devate the individual’s ability taking the
normal state as a starting point.
Another difference is that whereas psychiatry is imposed on the subject by a therapist, in
magick the practitioner is both subject and therapist, taking his own decisions and
moving in his own direction.
In the past magick was a hit and miss business relying on arbitrary belief systems. With
the benefit of scientific and psychological paradigms it has become a science in its own
right, a science of self-recognition, and self- improvement through the process of
initiation.
The current magical revival places less emphasis en authority than did the revival of the
nineteenth century. Crowley, Spare, Johnston and their ilk are mostly responsible for this
since it was they who put at our disposal the techniques of self initiation and selfrealization.
The individual has, to a large extent, superceded the hieradical organism to which he would, at a previous time, have necessarily belonged.
This is not to say, however, that organized magical groups are an outmoded device - on the contrary, they ought, for many reasons, to be actively encouraged.

Here’s a warning from one technique – sigils can be more powerful than they appear, for such an easy technique. I once cast a sigil for a particular desire, and the object of my desire became an obsession,
even when I consciously realised that it was damaging the rest of my life. To this day, twelve years
later, there is a psychological scar where I removed the sigil by banishing. In this case, which has
similarities to Chaos Magick (i.e. dangerous fascination with results over aims) there is a useful
technique which can mitigate against such problems, called an “environment check.” Before opening the briefcases, you can use this technique to ensure that the rest of your personality isn’t going to rebel or have
problems with the particular result being gained. It is quite interesting that what stops us succeeding is often the fear of success, not failure! Check, in the immortal words of the Spice Girls, that what you
want is what you really really want

(i mean it!)

these are the important ones

from the iaap-files

"Invent new magical weapons and invest them with magical potency for particular tasks.
At all costs avoid the traditional unless it has a direct personal effect!"

more from the notes:

any object which can be carried can be used as a sigil. It is
programmed into the subconscious function in the same way as any other sigil except
that it is designed to exert its influence only in a particular kind of situation or when held
in a special way. In view of this it can be multi-functional.

BEWARE OF THE OBJECTS

so the suitcases are sigils now?

NAIR0BI1966's background pretty much sums up the whole RA series. Why put up a background that slams you and other IAAP followers?

Stupidity I guess.

SO ITS EITHER STUPIDITY OR MAGICK

..or both? ;-)

In modern uses, the concept was mostly popularized by Austin Osman Spare, who published a method by which the words of a statement of intent are reduced into an abstract design; the sigil is then charged with the will of the creator. Spare's technique, now known as sigilization, has become a core element of chaos magic. The inherently individualistic nature of chaos magic leads most chaos magicians to prepare and cast sigils in unique ways, as the process of sigilization has never been defined rigorously and the magician is expected to 'fill in the blank spots' by his or her self. Sigils are used for magical spells as well as for the creation of thoughtforms.

Modern sigils may appear in any medium—physical, virtual, or mental. Visual symbols are the traditional, and presumably still most popular form, but the use of aural and tactile symbols in magic is not unheard of.

A hypersigil is an extended work of art with magical meaning and willpower, created using adapted processes of sigilization. This contextual meaning has been popularized by Grant Morrison, who claims that his comic series, The Invisibles, is a hypersigil.

The term sigil is also used by R.A. LaMothe in his upcoming animated series ChiMera, as an ancient magical item which holds the keys to mankind's salvation or its doom. The item consists of six runes of power that are bestowed upon the earth through either an object or person.
