Update: Yeah, I just spent $25 on a new Paul McCartney song. The song "Lifelong Passion (Sail Away)" is credited to Paul McCartney/Fireman. It is more accessible than previous Fireman material. It has a full set of lyrics, although the vocal has more echo and is lower in the mix than most McCartney songs. It has an Indian flavor, but cleverly features a prominent harmonica.
The chorus goes:
Give me love love love love love love love
Be my lifelong passion
Sail Away Sail Away Sail Away
Is the song worth $25?
Well, it is for a good cause. The song is a nice addition to the McCartney canon. I will definitely give it lots of airplay at home. But if he is going to start charging that much money per song on a regular basis, I think he should bring it to my house personally and stay for lunch.

As far as aja's list of who's here, I'm kinda a little of all those, BUT..... I'd also like to acknowledge the fine job Mr. PHONY has done with these videos, just in terms of the craft of 'horror inducing' elements.
After the success of "The Ring", my wife and I started investigating the whole 'Asian Horror' genre.
Besides the original version of "The Ring", "The Eye", and the wonderfully deranged films of Takishi Miike: "Audition", "Ichi The Killer", "Gozu", just to name a few.
Now, I'm not that big of a horror , but I appreciate the 'art'. It's not The Beatles..... it's not even "The Simpsons", but MR. Phony's pieces are better than "The Blair Witch Project"!

ReplyDeleteSeeing that you're recently active here, I (km artlu) want to thank you for peddling this addictive and enthralling topic in the schoolyard over at Rigorous Intuition.
The mysteries explored here have tugged at me for decades, and now, thanks to you, my pursuit is much less random.
One thing stands out for me by its absence (as far as I'm able to determine) in the canon.
This dentist who originally dosed George and John:
- such an act was egregiously unethical within the psychedelic community of the era.
- all the more so for a society dentist whose career and professional standing would have been particularly sensitive to his repute as an individual, beyond the quality of his work.
It's always felt odd to me that the incident is remarked upon as a historical milestone...and that's it, no further examination. When in fact such an action was outstandingly risky and unethical.
Is anything (name, history, etc.) known of this person?

ReplyDeleteWhat do people here think about a PID-themed graphic novella? I think I could make a pretty solid one if I wasn't so concerned about getting lawsuits from Apple and the Beatle estates.
ReplyDeleteIt's a head-scratcher to me how IAAP stays so immune to this concern himself- but then again he's not selling anything for profit, and he may well be operating under an official sponsorship.
Does anybody have any ideas on this? If I could convince myself there was a legal approach to doing it, I think I could pretty easily work up a sample and find a publisher for it. I'd appreciate thoughts, suggestions, and potential collaborators (I would do the art, you would do the writing). Many thanks.

The dentist's name that gave them the "dreaded lysergic" is given in the Anthology "director's cut". (more like a beta version of the final cut) I can't tell you what it is without watching the thing again, although the timeline could narrow it down I suppose. Or maybe I posted it at NIR, dunno.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, you make a good point about someone who is a trained professional giving these famous people LSD when it would be seen as unethical, but then again.. Some no doubt broke away from the ethics because they felt they were doing the recipient a favor, opening up their minds, etc. Also, it may not have been illegal at the time, (yet) a factor that may have weighed in on the decision.
Somebody must have been worried about getting sued. The Beatles Anthology book goes to great pains to use only the word "dentist" in sentence after sentence. Even the detail man, Bob Spitz, in his almost 1000-page Beatles biography just says that the unnamed dentist got it from the unnamed manager of the Playboy Club, who got it from Michael Hollingshead.

Things like "I Feel Fine" and "Run For Your Life" borrowed heavily from other songs. I would certainly hope that nobody "official" would stand in your way.
